Respiratory Distress

It may not be clear at first as to why your pet is having trouble breathing. It is imperative if there is any concern about your pet’s breathing to immediately seek veterinary attention. Regardless of the reason, providing oxygen supplementation and reducing stress are the very first things that need to be done — secure the airway! Once we are able to stabilize the patient, further diagnostics may be performed.

Examples of reasons why animals present with respiratory distress are:

  • Airway obstruction
  • Asthma
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pleural effusion
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Diaphragmatic hernia
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary thromboembolism
  • Anaphylaxis
