Pre and Post Surgery Care

In preparation for your pet’s surgery at AVSEC, all food must be withheld after midnight the night before surgery. On the morning of surgery, feel free to give water, but please withhold medications. If you have questions about giving medication before your pet’s surgery, feel free to call the surgery department at Alpenglow Veterinary Specialty + Emergency Center at 303-443-GLOW (4569).

You will have scheduled a drop-off appointment between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. on the morning of your pet’s surgery. An intern or nurse will meet you for this brief drop-off. Please call the day before surgery with any final questions or concerns. You can always feel free to call the clinic for an update on the day of surgery.

After surgery, we will call you with an update to let you know how your pet is doing. Depending upon the type of surgery, it is likely that your pet may need to stay overnight with us. When your pet is ready to go home, you will need to schedule a discharge time.

At the time of pick-up, you will go over the discharge instructions in detail with a surgery nurse so that you feel comfortable caring for your pet at home while (s)he is recovering. Please be sure to schedule your discharge time as these appointments can often take 45 minutes to an hour. These discharge instructions explain the recovery process for each unique case so that you can aid your pet to a speedy and healthy recovery.

In all cases, it is extremely important to restrict exercise while your pet is healing. In many cases, we also ask that you confine your pet for a period of time. What confinement means is keeping your pet in a kennel that is big enough to stand up and turn around in or in a small room that has nothing that your pet can jump up on. Also know that for many cases, you can leave your pet alone for four to six hours at a time, even during the initial recovery stage.

We are committed to helping you every step of the way, by answering your questions and guiding you through the rehabilitation process, so feel free to call us anytime after you have taken your pet home.
